I read this instead of going to sleep at night。 I just couldn’t put it down once I got to chapter 5。

*3。5* okay I liked this book but I’m not really into fantasy but still good just not my fave。 Also I listened to the audiobook idk if that makes a difference

I wanted to like this because my friend said it was ‘good smutty fantasy。’ But no。 It is not good fantasy， and it is not even good at being smutty。 I wrote up pages of ranting in my book notes but cannot justify spending more time on this book to summarize them here。 The most often repeated bolded words in those notes include: idiot， contorted， convoluted， and unbelievable。 In short， the main character is a melodramatic idiot whose loyalties and choices make no sense， the romance feels contrived I wanted to like this because my friend said it was ‘good smutty fantasy。’ But no。 It is not good fantasy， and it is not even good at being smutty。 I wrote up pages of ranting in my book notes but cannot justify spending more time on this book to summarize them here。 The most often repeated bolded words in those notes include: idiot， contorted， convoluted， and unbelievable。 In short， the main character is a melodramatic idiot whose loyalties and choices make no sense， the romance feels contrived and strained （both the initial barrier keeping them apart and then the later consummation）， the plot is thin and contorted and fails to live up to the fairytale references it tries to make， and the ending is barely satisfying。This was frustrating to read because the writing is good on a sentence-by-sentence basis。 And it wasn’t so bad that I DNF’d it—I did care enough to read to the end。 That said， I am baffled about all the five-star reviews and even more baffled about how this was considered good enough to warrant a long series。 。。。more
